GRANITE FALLS, N.C. — Members of the North Carolina National Guard are deploying to Egypt this spring to oversee the treaty of peace between Egypt and Israel.
Congressman Mark Meadows said he's very proud of the guardsmen. They're being sent to help keep the peace at the Israeli-Egyptian border. There have been issues in the Sinai there with gunmen who have attacked peace-keeping forces before. The congressman and many other people Saturday are praying for the safety of our men and women in uniform.
The mobilization ceremony was for the 630th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion. The soldiers will help the multinational force of observers' mission that oversees the treaty of peace between Egypt and Israel. It's an independent international organization that relies on troops from the United States, Canada, France and Italy among other countries.
The 630th, which is based in Lenoir, is being deployed with another North Carolina-based guard unit already serving in Egypt.
This is a year-long deployment for the more than 40 men and women.
