CHARLOTTE — Police expect a busy Plaza Midwood intersection to be closed for most of the morning after an SUV slammed into a utility pole early Friday.
The crash happened just after 1 a.m. at the intersection of Central Avenue at Hawthorne Lane.

A BMW SUV crashed into a utility pole at that corner, splintering the bottom of the pole, causing it and traffic lights to lean over the roadway.
No power outages were being reported in the area.
Officials told Channel 9 it is going to take a while to fix but could not give a timetable on when exactly the road would be reopened.
The pole will need to be replaced and crews will have to get the traffic lights back up as well.

It is unclear what caused the SUV to hit the pole but Channel 9 crews saw the driver speaking with officers at the scene.
Drivers are urged to avoid the area all morning.
Channel 9 anchor Blaine Tolison is with police on the scene and will have live updates all morning on Eyewitness News.
