Thief seen breaking into CMS storage units arrested

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police say a man seen breaking into storage units at approximately eight CMS campuses, stealing more than $8,000 in custodial equipment and supplies, has been identified and arrested.

Timothy R Hughes of Charlotte is charged with 11 counts of felony larceny after burglary and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools police partnered with Crimestoppers to identify the suspect.

The break-ins were reported on April 1, during spring break, and most recently on May 31.

The stolen items include cleaning machines and pressure washers, cases of garbage bags and cleaning supplies.

CMS police released videos and photos of the suspect. Detective Tim Jolly with CMS Police told us every dollar counts for teachers and students, and he was focused on catching the criminal stealing from schools.

“When those items are taken and stolen from the school system that's more money coming out of the budget.”
