CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — Trash is piling up in one Catawba County community and neighbors say they haven’t seen any action from the county.
The mess has been building up along Bethany Church Road, near the intersection of Claremont Road in Newton. According to Catawba County tax records, no one has paid property taxes there in more than 10 years.
It has become a dumping ground for garbage.
Neighbors said all the trash is a health hazard that is attracting rats to their properties.
“Every time you drive by, trash, especially when you get these heavy winds, the stuff blows everywhere,” said neighbor David Caswell. “It draws rats and goes in people’s yards. And it’s just trashy looking when the dump is up on the road on the left.”
>> In the video at the top of the page, Channel 9′s Dave Faherty talks to neighbors desperate for help, and county officials to find out who’s responsible for the mess and years of delinquent taxes.
