CHARLOTTE — Catawba Brewing Co. has shuttered its taproom in Charlotte’s Belmont neighborhood after six years — but don’t count the brand out just yet.
The search is on for a new location in South End near the Rail Trail, says Sam Gautreau, brand manager for Made By The Water.
That holding portfolio of Alabama-based Wiregrass Equity Partners acquired Catawba and its Palmetto Brewing Co. in October 2021.
“We’re just really trying to find a better location for the taproom. This really is just a location change and nothing else,” he says.
The Belmont location was not performing for the brand; the goal is to find a spot with more foot traffic that can provide customers with a more engaging experience, Gautreau says.
A former Catawba employee said that the staff was informed on Monday morning that the brewery would close and they were all being let go. No severance was offered — and there was no talk about plans to reopen, the employee says.
