Van smashes into home in northeast Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Officials responded to a van that crashed into a building in northeast Charlotte Tuesday afternoon.

They were called to the scene on Derrydowne Drive off Spring Garden Lane around 12:45 p.m.

Latina Diakite wasn’t home when the Toyota minivan plowed into the basement of her home.

Diakite said, "I just came home, and I saw the yellow tape. I was just like, what happened?"

She said by the time she arrived, the van had already been towed away.

There were two women in the van. A family member of the driver said they were turning from a stop sign on Spring Garden, when something happened.

"They made a wide turn and the steering wheel didn't work, or something happened with the steering wheel,” Yasmin Sanchez said.

She said the car raced, and her aunt, who was driving, couldn’t stop.

Medic responded to the scene, but the women in the car were OK. The driver was also relieved about something else.

"She was just happy that nobody was in the house,” Sanchez said. “She's happy that no one got hurt."

Diakite said, usually, she would have been right there with her grandchildren.

"If I was here, more than likely, I would have been outside here," Diakite said.

Police are still investigating the accident and no one has been charged.
