CHARLOTTE, N.C. — James Mitchell is an African-American at-large council member, a Democrat known for embracing expansive government spending. Ed Driggs is a white district council member, a Republican who touts conservative fiscal policy.

Despite those differences — and differing perspectives — Mitchell and Driggs view the possibility of committing taxpayer money for a Major League Soccer team in similar fashion.
In recent days, Mitchell and Driggs, who are, respectively, the chair and vice chair of council’s economic development committee, spoke to the Charlotte Business Journal about city government’s prospective role in helping bring an expansion soccer club to town.
