CHARLOTTE — U.S. Rep. Alma Adams nominated Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton for the most prestigious honor for North Carolinians.

Adams requested that Gov. Roy Cooper award the Newton with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
In addition to Newton’s success on the field, Adams cites his numerous charity contributions.
“Since 2012, the Cam Newton Foundation has given over $5 million to support schools, students, faculty and nonprofits,” Adams wrote in the letter to the governor.

A spokesperson for Cooper did not respond to a request for comment Monday.
Adams also sent a letter to South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster asking for him to award Newton with the Order of the Palmetto.
