CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — The Humane Society of Catawba County believes a burglar used a memorial brick out front to smash their way through a window.
Manager Amanda Davis said the thieves stole syringes from the Hope Clinic inside the Humane Society.
"It's pretty pathetic is all I can say. It's sad that they did it. I have house cats that go in and out of the room where they broke through the window and luckily none of them got out. That was the main concern when we came in. We made sure everyone was accounted for,” Davis said.
None of the nearly 150 dogs and cats were taken from the Humane Society.
There was damage to one of the windows and vandalism to a TV and DVD player. The intruder’s presence also had an effect on some of the dogs and cats.
"I really feel bad for the animals. Especially the ones we keep in the office. We came in and they had vomited. They were definitely in distress that someone had been in here that they did not know,” said animal services coordinator Natalie Robinson.
The Humane Society said they keep the medicine for the cats and dogs locked up.
Fortunately, none of it was taken. The thief did take money from two donation bottles used to raise money for the influx of kittens this time of year.
"We strictly go on donations and the generosity of the public that step up and put forth and donate to us. For somebody to hit a nonprofit organization is just sad. It really is just sad,” Robinson said.
The Humane Society said they have already gotten calls from people in the area wanting to help. They are thankful none of the animals were harmed.
