CLOVER, SC — Volunteers armed with hammers, lumber, and roofing tiles transformed a South Carolina veteran's home Thursday.

The home was build by Wilfred Boyd's grandparents over 70 years ago.

“These are memories, you know my grandparents, they loved this house,” he explained. “Family functions were here, small kitchen, I don’t know they got all that food out of there to feed all those people. It was wonderful then."

Boyd was 16 when he moved back to the property with his mother. In the 1970s, he left to serve in the Army as a radio teletype operator at Fort Bragg and Fort Gordon. He went on to be a chemist and a truck driver, but eventually retired because of his health.

Over the years, his grandparents and mom passed away, but the house remained.

"Oh, it’s been here for me, family’s been here for me," he said.

Thursday, TruGuard, an Owens Corning Platinum contractor, installed the new roof as part of Owens Corning's national Roof Deployment Project.  It came together through Habitat for Humanity of York County.

It's part of a larger project to repair his run-down home and one of 40 homes Habitat for Humanity of York County aims to repair this year. It's in honor of its 30th anniversary.

With all the positive growth, they're trying to ensure no one is left behind.

"We just want to continue to lift up," Habitat for Humanity's Executive Director Tim Veeck told Channel 9. "We're part of this great growing community that we also want to make sure that everyone has access to great quality of life."

"It's a blessing, it is a stone-cold blessing, it's one of the best things that's ever happened to me in my life," Boyd said.
