YORK COUNTY, S.C. — The York County Sheriff's Office arrested 11 inmates after a pair of brothers initiated an attempted escape at the York County Jail.

The attempted escape happened over the weekend at the York County jail after inmates were allegedly complaining about "the meals given to them for dinner," according to a sheriff's office incident report obtained by the Rock Hill Herald.

17-year-old Devan Johnson and 18-year-old Quincy Johnson are charged with attempted escape, assault, and conspiracy in an attack on two guards.

Police said Devan Johnson attacked a guard, stole his keys, and threw the keys into Quincy Johnson's cell.

Quincy then allegedly fought with two officers when they tried to get him under control.

"The incident was under control quickly, with quick action by the officers who were working," Trent Faris, spokesperson for the York County Sheriff's Office.

Police also arrested 8 other inmates for trying to flood the jail during the chaos.

Another inmate, 24-year-old Jacob Tyler Sprouse, was arrested for possession of a weapon in jail, after a shank was found in a shower.

Officials said the assaulted officers are expected to be OK.
