At around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer was shot in the leg after police responded to a disturbance at a restaurant on East 36th Street near North Davidson Street in NoDa, according to CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings.
Police on the scene confirmed to Channel 9 that an officer was shot, and that he was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He has since been released, CMPD said.
Jennings said the preliminary investigation indicated that officers did not return gunfire during the shooting.
Authorities searched for a suspect for hours before two sources told Channel 9 that police arrested McFadden at a home on Ruth Drive in north Charlotte. Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the home, where a large police presence could be seen.
Later Tuesday, Channel 9 obtained arrest warrants that said McFadden was charged with discharging a weapon into an occupied property in connection with the shooting. At that time, CMPD said no arrests had been made regarding the officer who was shot.
But then on Wednesday, CMPD said McFadden was also charged for shooting the police officer.
McFadden had his first court appearance Thursday, where a judge raised his bond for one of the counts of murder to $150,000. This makes his total bond now $270,000. His next court date is July 12.
Early Tuesday morning, a large police presence could be seen in the area near the Blind Pig restaurant where police were called to the shooting and several blocks remained closed as officers investigated.
A bartender at the Blind Pig told Channel 9′s Anthony Kustura that staff asked a person to leave the bar at closing time around 2 a.m. A suspect became upset and shot at one of the bar’s security members resulting in the call to CMPD.
“He almost shot one of our bouncers,” Mick Smith, an employee at the Blind Pig said. “We called (police) and said, ‘Hey, somebody is shooting at us, send cops.’”
When police arrived, a suspect began shooting, hitting the officer, police said. No one else was hurt in the shooting and the officer is recovering at the hospital.
“We see where we have a couple of different locations where shots were fired, we don’t know if every one of those shots was fired at officers, but at least one was fired at him,” Jennings said.
North Davidson Street was closed from 34th Street to Mercury Street and 36th Street closed was between North Tryon Street and North Alexander Street for hours on Tuesday morning as police investigated and searched for a suspect.
Police initially told Channel 9 there may have been a safety threat in the area, because a suspect was not in custody.
“We’re still looking for who the suspect might be and still investigating this case and its very early on in the investigation, but my hope is that we would be able to hold the shooter accountable for shooting our officer,” Jennings said Tuesday morning.
No other details have been released at this point.
