WADESBORO, N.C. — Police said a young boy was killed after being struck by gunfire during a drive-by shooting late Tuesday night in Wadesboro.
Investigators said they were called to W. Carolina Avenue just before midnight for a report of shots fired. When they got to the scene, officers said two homes had been fired upon.
A 12-year-old boy inside one of the houses was hit by at least one bullet. The child was rushed to the hospital but did not survive.
“I got three (children) and a nephew, and I don’t know what I would have done if it was mine,” neighbor Tiffany Harris said.
Harris said the recent violence has her concerned for her children’s safety.
“Every day that I step out my door, I’m scared,” she said.
Police have not released the boy’s name.
“If people would stop and think about what they’re doing first, before they do it, because you got innocent people in the way,” neighbor Marketa said.
Authorities said three other children and two adults were in the house at the time of the shooting but were not hurt.
“We mourn today with the family, friends, and the community at the loss of life that occurred last night,” the police department said in a statement. “Our prayers truly go out to them as we seek consolation for the family and justice for those responsible. As this nation reels from turmoil facing it on multiple fronts, our community must come together to address the issues with respect for each other and a determination to end this senseless violence on all sides.”
Police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. They have not said if they think the home was targeted.
“Please reach out to the Wadesboro Police Department (704) 694-2167 or by message through our Facebook page if you have any information that may be helpful.”
