Board of Commissioners to swear in next Mecklenburg County sheriff

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mecklenburg County's new Board of Commissioners has a full plate of issues to discuss at its first meeting Tuesday night.

The first thing the commissioners will do is swear in the new Mecklenburg County sheriff, Garry McFadden.

He said he is going to start talking about how African Americans are policed and is promising to bring changes.

The new board of commissioners could also bring more changes to everything from your tax dollars to education.

All nine commissioners are Democrats for the first time since the 1960s.

During the commissioners' swearing in Monday night, the board mentioned several issues they are planning to tackle including funding for CMS, Affording Housing, focusing on the environment, mental health, a push for Universal pre-K, and setting a new property tax rate.

Some commissioners admit they've already heard concerns from some conservative constituents who question how the Democratic board will still represent every side.

"I've never asked anyone if they were a Democrat or Republican. I value everyone's input," Commissioner Elaine Powell said.

The new board will get to work on Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
