2 firefighters injured fighting 3-alarm blaze

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two firefighters were hurt while battling a blaze at a South Charlotte Apartment Complex.

The fire broke out around 8:30 Saturday morning at Tyvola Center Apartments. Flames quickly shot through the roof of one of the units.
At one point, a few residents were trapped inside their homes.

One firefighter was injured when the ceiling collapsed inside the building. A second one was also injured.

Fire officials say one resident was apparently in a big hurry to get out of the complex.

They say he drove over a hose line which snatched the line away from firefighters.

"Folks are in a hurry, we understand that, but we have an emergency to deal with while they may be late for work," says Rob Kinniburgh, Deputy Fire Chief, Charlotte Fire Dept.

That person was taken into custody by CMPD. No residents were hurt, but 22 families were displaced by the fire.

The Red Cross is helping them find shelter.
