Birkdale Village project takes a hit as Huntersville’s planning board declines to give nod

A proposed $90 million project at Birkdale Village would add 150,000 square feet of office and a 450-space parking deck.

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — The rezoning request for a proposed expansion of Birkdale Village in Huntersville did not win the support of the town’s planning board.

At its meeting Tuesday, the planning board voted against a recommendation to approve a rezoning request from Birkdale Village owner North American Properties. The motion to recommend approval failed by a 5-2 vote.

NAP is seeking the rezoning to allow for the development of a building with 150,000 square feet of office space and 25,000 square feet of street-level retail space at Birkdale Village. The developer is also proposing a 450-space parking deck.

The planning board makes recommendations to the town’s board of commissioners, which has final authority on the rezoning.
