COLUMBIA, S.C. — A bill that could allow gun owners to carry concealed handguns without a permit is on its way to the South Carolina Senate.
House members approved the measure by a vote of 90 to 30.
Dan Roberts, with SC Carry, told Channel 9 that they are backing this change. Roberts said he believes the general public is at a disadvantage and this will amend that.
“Criminals don’t get carry permits. They just don’t and it’s provable, ”Roberts said.
However, retired trooper James Mahon said that while he supports the 2nd Amendment, he thinks doing away with permits is dangerous.
“I think you ought to have a permit. I think you ought to take a class. I think you ought to know firearm safety. I think you ought to be a responsible gun owner,” James Mahon said.
The bill does have some restrictions on where you can concealed carry.
For example, you cant carry to a police station, correctional or detention faculty. Court houses are also off-limits.
“The 2nd Amendment, whether people want to accept it or not, is a civil right that is as important as all the other civil rights are. So I support training, but it should not be mandated,” Roberts told Channel 9.
The last time this issue came up it passed in the House but failed in the Senate.
However, proponents think it will be different this time.
