UNION COUNTY, N.C. — The bicyclist struck on Saturday afternoon in a Union County hit-and-run has died from his injuries, officials said.

Officials said 53-year-old Jeffrey S. Masingill died Sunday.

"It was bad,” said Caroline Rose, who lives nearby. “We just heard a bunch of commotion and cops and everything."

Officials said the bicyclist was airlifted to a hospital after getting hit on Rocky River Road between Newtown Road and Highway 84 in Monroe.

The driver has yet to be found, and police have no evidence and no witnesses.

“It makes me sick to my stomach, seriously, if somebody can do that,” neighbor Vernon Rose said.

Police have not released a description of the car or any information to help identify the driver.

Residents said drivers on that stretch of Rocky River Road don’t obey the posted speed limit.

"This road here is crazy. I mean people drive here like crazy up and down these roads every day,” said neighbor Michael Cory Moore. "People run the stop lights, stop signs. People pull out (of) their driveways and not even look."

Masingill just moved to the Matthews area and was working as an executive at Cyral Bath, an aerospace technology company in Monroe.

“It takes a low-life to do something like that and keep going,” said one neighbor.
