CHARLOTTE — Members of the community came together to raise money for the family of fallen CMPD Officer Mia Goodwin Saturday morning with a benefit ride through the University City division where she worked.

The ride for Goodwin started at 10:30 a.m. at the Oasis Shriners parking lot on Doug Mayes Place.

The one-hour route around northeast Charlotte on Interstate 485 also ended at Oasis Shriners, with barbecue plates, a silent auction, raffles, and T-shirts.

Participants paid $20 per car to participate.

Organizer Crystal Ashe said the ride raised $11,500 towards the college fund of Goodwin’s children.

The ride came just one week before Officer Goodwin’s birthday on April 15.

Officer Goodwin was hit and killed in the line of duty by an 18-wheeler on Dec. 22, 2021 while responding to a crash on Interstate 85.

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office provided escort for the ride as a way to honor her memory and provide support for her family.

Channel 9 spoke with Mia’s father, Antonio Figueroa. He said he hopes people remember his daughter not only for her service as a police officer, but also for what she meant to those around her.

“I applaud the gratefulness for her being a police officer. But I want everybody to know that she was a fantastic daughter and an awesome child. A friend. A great mother. A great sister. And that’s who Mia Danielle Figueroa Goodwin was,” Figueroa said.
