CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It’s a special homecoming for Harding University High School in west Charlotte. During halftime, Belk presented Harding with a check for $25,000 as part of the department store’s Project Hometown Initiative.
“It feels amazing,” booster club president Matt Morrow said. “For three years we have constantly tried to put the message out there about our lack of equity in facilities and support from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.”
For years, Channel 9 has covered Harding’s quest to get adequate updates for their athletic facilities. Booster club president Matt Morrow says this cash will make a huge difference.
“You see the facilities,” Morrow said. “You go to other schools they have a field house, their track is in a great position, their bleachers are brand new.”
School leaders say the money will be spread across all teams to make sure everyone gets what they need. They are grateful for Belk’s donation and for any community support.

“We really need the money,” athletic director Bryant Bailey said. “We need the community to come by and support us like all the other teams are being supported.”
“This money from Belk is a great, great start to what we need to get done here for equity and equality,” Morrow said.
Belk says their Project Hometown Initiative is a community outreach program aimed at supporting underserving and under-resourced communities in Belk’s own backyard.
