CHARLOTTE — Hundreds are expected to gather at the Park Expo and Conference Center Saturday to celebrate Black Men’s Wellness Day.
The message doctors want you to take away from the event: Be selfish with your health.
According to the CDC, Black men are more than twice as likely to die from prostate cancer than other men. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death among Black men.
Saturday’s health expo is dedicated to Black men and their families. Benjamin Missick, a doctor at Novant Health, said events like these can save lives.
“It’s an opportunity for the community to uplift and get our men taken care of,” he said. “I think we as men sometimes fall to the background on purpose because we’re providing. We’re just trying to make sure that everyone around us is taken care of, and we try to be that rock.”
Novant Health and others are teaming up to help sponsor Black Men’s Wellness Day.
The event starts at 7 a.m. Saturday and goes until noon at the Park Expo and Conference Center in southeast Charlotte. It’s free, and there will be free health screenings, including blood pressure check to more comprehensive screenings.
Channel 9’s Damany Lewis will also emcee a 5K run or walk for the event.
