YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Residents in York County are upset after they say someone is stealing their checks and trying to cash them for thousands of dollars.
“The bank called up and asked, ‘Did you write this check for $1,500?’ No!” said neighbor William Van Sickle.
Van Sickle said he put a $76 check in the mail for his power bill, but it was stolen.
According to the sheriff’s office, someone washed the check and reprinted it. The person then drove an hour and a half away to a South State Bank in Laurens and attempted to cash the check for $1,500.
Fortunately for Van Sickle, the bank rejected the check, saying it didn’t recognize the signature.
Channel 9 reporter Tina Terry learned that detectives are investigating nearly a dozen similar cases; some of which the person was successful in and got away with thousands of dollars.
“The red flag on a mailbox is a red flag to, ‘Hey, watch out for my mail,’” said Deputy Trent Faris.
Faris went on to say residents should take outgoing checks directly to the post office.
Neighbors said they plan to do more to protect one another.
“I think if we can be more vigilant as a neighborhood and watch for what’s going on. That’s gonna help a lot,” said neighbor Suzie Price.
