CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Winston-Salem-based BB&T Corp. and Atlanta-based SunTrust Banks Inc. have gotten one big federal go-ahead to merge into Truist Bank — provided that they divest 30 SunTrust branches, including several in North Carolina.
And First Horizon National Corp. is snatching those up as it works to expand its network.
The BB&T-SunTrust combination, set to close this quarter, creates the nation’s sixth-largest bank in terms of assets, with a headquarters in uptown Charlotte.
