IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Iredell-Statesville schools will have alternate bathrooms ready for transgender students next school year.
The move was made in response to the state's controversial House Bill Two which requires people to use the bathroom matching their biological sex.
The district told Channel 9's partners at The Record and Landmark that it has one or more single-toilet bathrooms available for students with extra privacy needs.
The school system has made accommodations for its transgender students for several years by discussing the situation with parents and students and making the appropriate adjustments, said Brady Johnson, superintendent of Iredell-Statesville Schools.
“I hope that state and federal officials allow us to continue to make those accommodations,” said Johnson. “We’ve got this.”
Just this week, Channel 9 learned that activists fighting the controversial law won a major battle -- a federal judge has agreed to consider a motion to block the bathroom provision while a federal lawsuit makes its way through the courts.
