Back Yard Burgers closes local restaurants amid restructuring

CHARLOTTE — A better-burger restaurant chain that returned to the Charlotte market less than three years ago has closed — at least for now — both of its locations here.

Back Yard Burgers opened its Gastonia restaurant in September 2020, reentering the market after previous stores here had shuttered in 2012. A location in Harrisburg followed in 2021, with CEO Dennis Pfaff telling CBJ at the time that the brand had plans to keep growing here.

Now those two locations have closed and are being evaluated as part of a restructuring, says a spokesperson for Axum Capital Partners, the Charlotte-base private-equity firm that owns the brand.
