On Oct. 7, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were called to Peachtree Drive near Nations Ford Road where Lampkin was found shot to death.
The Investigation
Bethea met Lampkin at a business park off Nations Crossing Road, according to court documents.
Many offices are vacant, but the business park has security cameras. One caught footage of an altercation between the two men.
Bethea struck Lampkin in the face and knocked him to the ground, according to documents. Bethea then forced the victim to go in the trunk. He shut the trunk and drove away.
Someone called 911 at about 11 a.m. on Oct. 7 to report someone lying close to Peachtree Drive.
The 911 caller stated there was a Black male on the side of the road who had blood on his shirt and was not awake, according to documents.
Lampkin had been shot twice and died at the scene, police said.
Investigators identified the car in the security video, looked up the registered owner, and were told that Bethea sometimes drives the car.
Police made the arrests a little more than one month later.
The suspects have criminal histories.
Bethea was convicted of first-degree rape in 2000. He spent nearly 20 years in prison before he was released in 2020.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team, the U.S. Secret Service, and the Hickory Police Department arrested Bethea.
Bethea was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The investigation is ongoing.
