Driver, passenger killed in crash involving tractor-trailer in Statesville, police say

STATESVILLE, N.C. — Police were investigating a crash that killed two people Thursday in Statesville.

Michael Watkins, 62, was driving a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee north on Garner Bagnal Boulevard and tried to turn left onto Buffalo Shoals Road when he hit a tractor-trailer, according to investigators.

The tractor-trailer ran off the road. The truck driver was injured and taken to a hospital.

Watkins and his passenger died at the scene. The passenger has not been identified.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew overhead and could see dozens of emergency crews on the scene with the intersection closed for hours.

This is an ongoing investigation.
