YOUNGSVILLE, N.C. — UPDATE: Desaree Hopkins has been found safe thanks to an anonymous tip, officials said.
Police in Franklin County are searching for a man who they say kidnapped a 1-year-old girl after he shot her mother Friday night in Youngsville, North Carolina.
Officials said Davon Whaley, 24, shot his ex-girlfriend and drove away with her daughter, Desaree Hopkins, in a white, four-door 2000 Pontiac.
An Amber Alert has been issued for Desaree who is described as having black hair and brown eyes. She is 2 feet tall and weighs 28 pounds. She was last wearing a pink shirt and blue jeans. Her name was originally reported as Jazari Whaley.
Whaley has brown eyes, stands 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 180 pounds. He has a tear drop tattoo on his face, a tattoo on his neck that says "93" and another on his left hand that reads "Reep." Officials said he is considered armed and dangerous.
Authorities told Channel 9's news partners ABC11/WTVD that Whaley started arguing with his ex-girlfriend, who has a domestic violence order against him, at the Hampton Village Apartments in the 100 block of Hampton Lane.
He then dragged her down the steps and shot her, police said. The woman, who has not yet been identified, fled in her car but crashed about a half mile down Hidden Hills Drive.
She was taken to WakeMed for treatment.
