FILE - CMPD Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department

CHARLOTTE — An Auburn University football player was shot in the chest last week in Uptown Charlotte, according to a police report.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says officers were called around 11:45 p.m. last Thursday for a shooting on E. 6th Street near N. Caldwell Street.

The CMPD report listed the victim as 24-year-old DeAngelo Carter. Our partners at the Charlotte Observer found him on the Auburn roster as a defensive tackle.

Police said Carter didn’t know the suspected shooter, but it’s not clear if the shooter is in custody. Police haven’t said what may have led to the shooting.

According to The New York Times and The Athletic, Carter has been released from the hospital. He told The Athletic he was in town to visit a friend.

We’re working on getting more information on the shooting. Check back for updates.
