Bishop addressed the public at Maggiano’s Little Italy at SouthPark mall following the Republican Women of Greater Charlotte lunch.
The announcement of Bishop’s candidacy came on the heels of current Attorney General Josh Stein revealing that he will be seeking the Democratic nomination for governor next year.
A Republican hasn’t been elected to this position since Zeb Walser in 1896.
Bishop said he wants to use the position to be an advocate for law enforcement.
“I will be a spokesman there for law enforcement. I think that could have a material effect on making sure they have the resources they need,” he said.
Bishop also said he will defend the state’s laws even if he doesn’t agree with them.
No Democrats have declared for the race yet.
