CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Atrium Health broke ground Thursday on a new Carolinas Rehabilitation hospital on the Carolinas Medical Center campus.

Plans call for a 150,000-square-foot hospital with 70 patient rooms and a 9,300-square-foot outpatient clinic. There will also be a therapy garden, an aquatic program and an independent living facility.

Construction is expected to take a little more than a year.

“This is the start of something big. It’s the first step of many in the Atrium Health organization’s modernization of our flagship hospital,” said Ken Haynes, president of the greater Charlotte region at Atrium. “This rehabilitation hospital is a place of innovation with promising breakthroughs in clinical care and research that will benefit generations to come.”

In 2018, Atrium announced a $1 billion capital investment to update the CMC campus. Proposed changes included the new Carolinas Rehabilitation hospital, a bed tower, expanded emergency departments and a pediatric outpatient center.
