STATESVILLE, N.C. — More than a decade later, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office has charged two people with the mysterious shooting death of a father of three.
Investigators say Joey Brewer was shot and killed in September 2011 while visiting a friend at the Myrtle Place Apartments in Statesville.
The ICSO took over the investigation in 2013 and last week, officers uncovered evidence connecting John Lewis Chambers, 42, and O’Kiera Donell Myers, 41, to Brewer’s killing.
The Iredell County Grand Jury issued indictments for both suspects and deputies later located Chambers in the custody of the U.S. Marshal Service for an unrelated case.
Last Friday, authorities with the ICSO and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation arrested Myers at a business in Statesville.
Both suspects are now facing multiple charges including first-degree murder.
“I am profoundly grateful that this case has reached a turning point and that Joey Brewer’s family may finally find a measure of peace,” Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell said in a statement. “The strength and perseverance they have shown over the years inspire us all.”
Campbell also emphasized that the investigation into Brewer’s death is ongoing. “We believe there are individuals with additional information who have not yet come forward,” Campbell said. “If you have information—or know someone who does—we urge you to contact us. Your help could make a difference.”
