‘Predator’ charged with sexually assaulting 2 women walking home in South End

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has arrested a man accused of sexually assaulting two women in the South End neighborhood this past weekend.

Police have charged Rogelio Marin Ramirez, 29, in two sexual assault investigations.

Officers said Ramirez attacked a 42-year-old woman early Sunday along East Bland Street near South Boulevard.

They said he forced her to her home, sexually assaulted her and took credit cards after the attack.

Police said Ramirez later used the stolen credit cards. Officers were then able to find the white BMW he was driving, and ultimately, Ramirez.

As a result of his arrest, detectives said they identified Ramirez as a suspect in a second assault.

Police said a 25-year-old woman was walking home early Saturday morning along South Boulevard near East Boulevard when a suspect in a white BMW sexually assaulted her.

She was able to escape but left her purse behind.

Police said Ramirez used her credit card to buy gas.

He has been charged with second-degree rape, second-degree sex offense, sexual battery, felonious restraint, three counts of financial card theft, two counts of obtaining property by false pretense, attempt to obtain property by false pretense and larceny.

“This person is a predator,” CMPD Captain Rob Dance said. “There is nothing that gives individuals like this the right to do what he has done and if you are a victim of any kind of sex assault, please come forward.”

Detectives are investigating whether Ramirez may be connected to any other crimes. When police arrested Ramirez on Monday, they found stolen credit cards belonging to several different people.

Police said they are talking to two additional potential victims.

“We need you to take people like this off of the street, charge them appropriately and put them behind bars where they belong,” Dance said.

He has a lengthy criminal history.

In 2014, he was charged with assault for grabbing a woman at the SouthPark Mall and taking a picture up her dress.

At the time, police received similar calls at the mall of a peeping tom harassing women, but Ramirez was ultimately found not guilty.

In August 2018, Ramirez was charged with assaulting a woman in a parking deck at UNC Charlotte, but his charges were dropped when the victim failed to appear in court.

Police are asking anyone with information to call 911 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
