ANSON COUNTY, N.C. — A local school district may now get investigators involved after discovering fake school fundraisers.
There have been multiple calls to Anson County businesses and churches asking for money to support district schools.
Leaders warn they're not legit.
"I think it's a real shame. And I think it's sorry that somebody would do stuff like that to people,” resident Diane Lear said. “People work hard for their money."
Superintendent Michael Freeman told Channel 9 some community members called the district office asking for more information about the alleged fundraisers, but no employees had authorized the fundraisers.
"It is very frustrating because we live in a very caring community. We have citizens and businesses who wholeheartedly support the schools, who want to do great things for our students and I think it's not fair to them to be misled," Freeman said.
Freeman said there was even a sign-up sheet for a donut fundraiser at a business, but none of the proceeds went to any schools.
"I've seen containers set up in different stores, help support different things,” Wadesboro resident Hattie Caple said. “You don't know, you never know [if they’re real]."
A warning is now posted on the homepage of the school district's website.
School district leaders told Eyewitness News anchor Liz Foster they are collecting more information and will turn it over to the Sheriff's Office.
"I hope they are able to find out who it is, and I hope they will be prosecuted," Lear said.
Before you support any school fundraisers, check with the district office.
In Anson County, the superintendent is now keeping a list of fundraisers approved by principals and the district office.
