American Airlines plots gate expansion at Charlotte Douglas International Airport

American Airlines CEO warns of more service reductions looming (MELISSA KEY)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Queen City’s dominant airline will continue building out its presence at Charlotte Douglas International Airport as the industry prepares for more recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

On its analyst call Thursday to discuss second-quarter earnings, American Airlines Group Inc. (NASDAQ: AAL) disclosed plans of operating three new regional gates at CLT by the end of the year.

Those three gates will be located on Concourse E, which is in the midst of a $50.5 million expansion project that will add 34,000 square feet of hold room, concessions space and support space on the north end. That project is slated for completion in the spring of 2022.
