CHARLOTTE, N.C. — American Airlines’ top executives said last week that 25,000 employees could expect to receive notification of potential furloughs this fall. Almost 2,600 of those workers — about 10% — are based in North Carolina.
In Charlotte, where American Airlines Group Inc. ranks as the sixth-largest employer, 1,479 employees at four locations will be affected in early October as the airline looks for ways to right-size the company in response to continual low demand for air travel due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

American Airlines said in a Worker Adjustment & Training Notification letter received on Thursday by the N.C. Department of Commerce that, across the state, it expects to furlough as many as 2,474 employees on Oct. 1 or shortly thereafter. American said it’s planning to furlough 40 additional employees in early November. And another 74 employees in North Carolina will be permanently “discharged” in October.
