NC woman accused of killing grandma caught at Georgia Walmart; 2-year-old boy safe

CLAYTON, N.C. — The woman accused of killing her grandmother and fleeing with her 2-year-old son has been taken into custody in Georgia, officials said.

The Clayton Police Department said Camille Nechelle Singleton, 31, was apprehended in Georgia at a Walmart on Sunday. Her son, Dior, was unharmed.

Clayton officials identified Singleton as a suspect in the homicide of Inita Gaither. Police reported that Singleton was on the run with her 2-year-old son and an Amber Alert had been issued for the child on Friday.

Police found Gaither, 68, dead inside her home during a welfare check around 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Family members identified the victim as the suspect’s grandmother.

The Clayton Police Department had requested the Amber Alert after speaking with Dior Singleton’s father, who is currently deployed on a U.S. Navy ship out to sea. Based on the additional information officers gathered from him, it was determined that the situation met the criteria for an Amber Alert, police said.

Officers responded to a call about a suspicious person at the Walmart around 11:30 a.m. Sunday and confirmed it was Singleton. Her son -- the subject of the Amber Alert -- was found to be unharmed. He was placed in the care of family members.
