Abducted 1-year-old NC boy found safe, father arrested in Virginia, police say

PERSON COUNTY, N.C. — A 1-year-old boy abducted from Person County, North Carolina on Thursday has been found safe and the suspect, the boy’s father, is in custody, the sheriff’s office said.

An Amber Alert was issued for 1-year-old Gabriel Newman around 10 p.m. Thursday. The Person County Sheriff’s Office said the abductor was believed to be Gregory Wendell Newman, the boy’s father.

The two were said to be heading north on Highway 57 toward Danville, Virginia in a Volkswagen Passat.

U.S. Marshals helped find the child Friday morning, according to officials, who said the child is safe. Gregory Newman was taken into custody in Danville, the sheriff’s office said.
