HENRY COUNTY, VA. — Authorities in Virginia canceled an Amber Alert Saturday for a 12-year-old girl, who was found safe in North Carolina.

Officials said Allie Michele Broadaway was found in Henderson, about an hour north of Raleigh.

The suspect, 21-year-old Kaleb Christopher Merritt, was with Broadaway and is now in custody, according to police.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office said Broadaway was treated by emergency medical services for minor injuries but did not say how she got them.

The Amber Alert was issued Friday night. Police said Broadaway was last seen at 2373 Reed Creek Drive in Bassett, which is in Henry County.

According to authorities, the girl and Merritt met on Instagram in December and continued to communicate.

In February, Merritt drove from Texas to Virginia to meet Broadaway. They saw each other several times, officials said.

He camped out in the woods behind her house during that time.

Merritt later told Broadaway, via a social media app, to leave her home, and authorities said she left willingly.

No other details have been released at this point. This is an ongoing investigation.
