Suspected robber found dead inside Matthews CVS while employees hid in locked room

MATTHEWS, N.C. — An alleged armed robber was found dead inside a Matthews CVS Thursday night, according to police.

Authorities said someone called Matthews police dispatchers around 10 p.m. to tell them a man with a gun was trying to rob the CVS Pharmacy at the corner of Sam Newell Road and Highway 51, and that employees had locked themselves in the back of the store.

Officers got there and tried to make contact with the man, but were unsuccessful. Police were able to determine that the store employees had locked themselves in a room away from the man and were safe.

A Special Response Team was called to the store and when those officers entered, they found 25-year-old Karreim Houser dead from a gunshot wound. They believe he died by suicide.

Authorities told Channel 9 that no officers fired any shots and that no CVS employees were hurt.

The investigation is ongoing.

On Wednesday, a homicide happened at the same intersection.
