Alexander Co. 17-year-old shot several times; 15-year-old charged, deputies say

STONY POINT, N.C. — A 17-year-old was shot several times overnight in Alexander County, deputies said. They said the suspect is just 15 years old.

The shooting happened around 12 a.m. Thursday in a cul-de-sac at the end of Thomas Lane, a dead end road in Stony Point. Investigators believe the motive for the shooting was robbery but they’re still trying to determine what the robbery was over.

Neighbors described hearing as many as five shots fired. When deputies arrived at the cul-de-sac, they say they found a 17-year-old shot several times.

They said the 15-year-old suspect left but was arrested a short time later at a home in the eastern part of the county.

The suspect didn’t answer any of the questions Channel 9′s Dave Faherty asked him as deputies led him into the courthouse to face a judge hours after the shooting. Because the case involves a juvenile, the judge closed the proceedings.

Faherty learned from the sheriff that the victim was able to talk with investigators prior to being taken to the hospital.

The neighbors in Stony Point are stunned by the gun violence and that it involved teenagers.

“I think it’s sad,” Alex Niemczyk said. “Hopefully the young man can pull through.”

“Over robbery, that’s just ridiculous,” Rebecca Carter said. “You don’t take someone’s life over robbery.”

The sheriff said the 15-year-old is in juvenile custody but faces additional charges, including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

People visiting the shooting scene told Faherty parents need to be more involved.

“Really shocking and I’m thinking parents need to watch their kids better and be parents better,” they said.

Faherty is still working to learn what the robbery was. Deputies said they expect to make additional arrests in this case.

The sheriff said the 17-year old is still in the hospital.
