CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police are investigating a shooting during rush hour Wednesday in broad daylight at an east Charlotte intersection.
Authorities were called to the 6600 block of Albemarle Road at 5:32 p.m. Wednesday.
When they arrived, officers found Adrian Flowe, 22, who had been shot in his car while he was driving.
Flowe was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries. The bullet was lodged in his heart, officials said.
Investigators determined that two cars were stopped at a traffic light at Albemarle Road and Regal Oaks Drive when the shooter stepped out of his car and fired into the Flowe's car several times, then fled the scene.
"We don't think this was road rage affiliated,” CMPD Capt. Dave Robinson said.
Police believe the shooter and Flowe know each other and that the crime was personal, not random.
“When we look at the area as a whole, we’re happy to report that crime is on the decrease, so I don't think people have a reason to feel that crime is out of control," Robinson said.
Channel 9 reporter DaShawn Brown spoke to several people who were at that intersection when the shooting happened.
Ashley Daniel said she tried to protect a child by covering them.
“It (the car) pulled up and then shots started firing,” Daniel said.
Another witness, Chad Harris, said he watched the suspect get out of his car, walk up to the driver and start shooting.
“It was a lot. It wasn't just a couple shots,” Harris said.
He said his 4-year-old son was there, too.
“That's the toughest part for me,” Harris said. “He did see what happened. We were literally 20 feet away from it.”
Police said Flowe drove off from the scene after being shot and ended up T-boning another car just two blocks away.
Investigators have not said what prompted the shooting, but witnesses said it doesn't matter.
“Those bullets could've hit anybody over there," Daniel said.
No arrests have been made.
Police describe the shooter as a black man, 20-25 years old and 5 feet 10 inches tall. He was driving a 4-door gray sedan.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
