CHARLOTTE — North Carolina’s plans for the substantial expansion of an Amtrak train maintenance complex near a key South End growth corridor has raised concerns among local government and economic development interests as well as the Wilmore Neighborhood Association.
The South End site along West Summit Avenue sits near the Iron District, a planned 55-acre redevelopment of Charlotte Pipe & Foundry’s headquarters expected to bring a mix of residential, retail, entertainment and office projects. The site borders Interstate 277 and the Wilmore and Wesley Heights neighborhoods.
Representatives from the Wilmore Neighborhood Association are concerned because expanding the rail maintenance center would cause Summit Avenue to be closed to public traffic.
In addition, the neighborhood has advocated for a light rail station at Summit Avenue as part of the proposed east-west Lynx Silver Line.
