Officials said the man was rushed to Atrium Carolinas Medical Center for treatment but was later pronounced dead.

The incident happened around 10:30 p.m.

Kendrick Darrell Hudson, 24 was driving the tug on the ramp near Concourse E and hit a piece of luggage dropped onto the tarmac, CMPD said.

He made a hard-right turn when the tug rolled on top of him.

Channel 9 learned he worked for Piedmont Airlines, which is a part of American Airlines.

The results of the state Department of Labor's investigation could take three to four months.

Detectives have notified officials with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, who will conduct a separate investigation.

American Airlines sent Channel 9 the following statement:

American Airlines is deeply saddened by the death of one of our team members from Piedmont Airlines late last night. Right now our priority is caring for his family, and for our team in Charlotte. We are extremely grateful to the coworkers and emergency personnel who provided assistance and medical aid throughout this event.

The North Carolina Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Division was notified of the death and has opened an investigation.

Officials said workplace death investigations typically take three to four months to complete but depending on the complexity of the case, it could take longer.
