CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Robert "Disco'' Sturdivant used to rock Charlotte as a club DJ more than 20 years ago.
Sturdivant wanted to revive his DJ career and singing career, but he needed another keyboard.
Using money he scrimped and saved, Sturdivant went to a pawn shop which later became Cash America Pawn and played a keyboard on layaway.
"That's the hundred dollars I paid on one of my payments," he said.
Sturdivant paid $260 on a $600 keyboard and he said he made a surplus of payments. Sturdivant said he assumed he could miss a payment one month.
When he missed a payment, Cash America sold he keyboard, kept his money and gave him a store credit.
"I don't want that," Sturdivant said. "I just want what I purchased or my money back."
Action 9 went to Cash America to see if Sturdivant's money could be returned..
A spokesperson said the company's policy is if a payment is missed, the layaway items can be sold.
Cash America then made an exception and refunded Sturdivant his $260 in payments.
"It's not much. It's just $260, but it's mine," Sturdivant said. "I give Channel 9 and Don Griffin my greatest gratitude."
