YORK, S.C. — A local cemetery mistakenly buried a person in a plot meant for a woman and her family.
She spent two years trying to get the cemetery to correct it.
"This is my father, Arthur Campbell, this is my brother, Terry Campbell," said Cynthia Campbell.
Campbell's father and brother were laid to rest at York Memorial Cemetery, but she was upset that someone else had been buried in one of the family's four other plots.
"Right here, someone is buried who shouldn't be here?" Action 9 reporter Don Griffin asked.
"Yeah, yeah," Campbell said.
She said York Memorial Cemetery's staff even put a blue flag in the ground marking the spot where someone is mistakenly buried.
Campbell said for two years, she has been trying to get them to correct the mistake.
"No one has called us, got in touch with us and said nothing," she said.
She said it bothers her knowing her father worked hard to pay for six plots, so all their family could be buried together, and then this happened.
"He saved every penny, nickel and dime he had to buy these plots and I feel like they used him because he was a senior citizen," said Campbell.
As Action 9 was working on the story, the manager showed up.
"So you are going to have to leave," the manager said.
"Could you explain to us why you haven't resolved the issue? Could you talk to us about this?" Griffin asked.
The manager referred Griffin to the regional manager who promised to look into the matter.
To make up for the mistake, York Memorial then gave Cynthia two other plots and located a seventh plot her father purchased.
They also agreed to give her free burial services. She is happy her two-year old ordeal is over.
"I feel good. If it wasn't for Don Griffin and Action 9, I would have never got the job done," Campbell said.
