ABC permits suspended at University City bar following two separate shootings

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A University City bar is losing its ABC permits following two recent shootings at the business.

Press Box Bar and Grille on North Tryon Street will lose the licenses it has held since 2014.

The North Carolina Division of Alcohol Enforcement said Saturday in a press release that since March, police have twice responded to gunshot calls at the restaurant.

The first shooting was on March 27 but while responding to another shooting on April 9, police said workers were uncooperative and a police officer was punched in the face by a patron while working the scene.

Officials said many of the patrons were “intoxicated and belligerent, yelling at CMPD officers” who were responding to the shooting and ignored commands to move away from the crime scene.

The bar’s security told police to “back off” and they would handle the situation themselves.

Authorities said all officers were used to control the crowd and they were unable to secure the scene and begin the investigation.

The suspension is immediate and will remain in effect until the case can be heard by the Office of Administrative Hearings.

It could be made permanent at that time.
