AAA: SC drivers paying less for gas than 1 year ago

SOUTH CAROLINA — For the first time in more than two months, gas prices in South Carolina are lower than they were a year ago, AAA Carolinas said.

In mid-August, South Carolinians started paying more for gas than they did the prior year, reaching a peak of 35 cents more on Oct. 6. Since then, gas prices have fallen rapidly, down 14 cents in the past week, according to AAA.

The group said average gas prices in the state have dropped 43 cents since mid-September to $3.20, which is 2 cents lower than the year-ago price of $3.22.

"This is great news for drivers," said David E. Parsons, president and CEO of AAA Carolinas. "As gas prices continue to fall, families can expect to save more money at the pump for the upcoming holiday season."

South Carolina has the second-lowest average gas price in the nation, according to AAA Carolinas. Missouri has the cheapest gas at $3.15.

The group said factors in the lower prices include the drop in crude oil prices, a somewhat stronger U.S. dollar and a decrease in demand because of the end of the summer driving season.
