SALISBURY, N.C. — Officials said that seven high school students and a bus driver were taken to a hospital after the driver suffered a medical issue, causing the school bus to crash into a tree Tuesday in Salisbury.

The crash happened close to the end of its afternoon route at about 4:20 p.m. on Jack Brown Road near Nicholas Road.

According to North Carolina State Troopers, the bus driver suffered from a medical issue while driving, causing Tuesday’s crash.

The West Rowan High School students and the bus driver were taken to a hospital; all had non-life-threatening injuries. Another student was treated at the scene.

Chopper 9 flew over the scene, where it appeared the bus had struck a tree. The district said the bus had run off the road and hit a culvert, a mailbox, and then two trees.

According to a district spokesperson, the driver suffered a medical issue, which caused Bus 19′s wreck. No other vehicles were involved.

Six of the seven students and the bus driver were released from the hospital, school officials said Tuesday night. The last student, who had minor injuries, remained in the hospital overnight for a morning procedure for a non-serious injury, the district said.
