5 teens killed when SUV crashes into bridge in North Carolina, police say

RALEIGH, N.C. — Five teenagers were killed after an SUV crashed into a bridge Sunday morning in Raleigh, police said.

According to WTVD, the wreck happened around 6:15 a.m. on Capital Boulevard near Fairview Road.

Laura Hourigan, a spokeswoman for Raleigh police, said the vehicle was heading downtown on Capital Boulevard “when it ran off the road to the right and struck a concrete bridge abutment.”

Police said all five people in the SUV -- ages 13, 14, 14, 17, and 17 -- died from their injuries. No names have been officially released.

It was the second deadly crash in Wake County on Sunday morning.

About four hours earlier, Knightdale police Officer Ryan Hayworth, 23, died after a driver crashed into two stationary police cars parked on Interstate 540 as officers investigated an accident.
